~Misty ~
It was a foggy black night. The mist gathered around me like a blanket, tightly encompassing my body, yet I kept running. Beads of sweat trickled off my body, flowing down my legs to the cold, hard ground. Froth gathered at my mouth, my legs quivered and ached; But I still didn’t stop. No Way. My footsteps echoed in my head, my blood pounded in my ears- “Mistyyy!”
My masters voice seemed to shake even my heart. “Misty! Where are you?!?!” I stumbled in the mud, falling forward and splashing the murk into my eyes. I couldn’t see. I heard Chance neigh wildly. Heard Haley call my name. But all I could do was wait. There was nothing left in me. I’m sorry. I thought. Smoke filled my lungs, making me struggle to breathe. Fire. Please let her be okay. And then, darkness.
My eyes slowly flickered open. The woods around me was burnt. Ash fell softly from the trees. It was barren. There was no life to be seen. I…was… alone. Questions buzzed in my mind. Where am I? Am I even alive? But then it hit me. The biggest, most terrifying thought to pass my mind yet. Where was Haley?
Despite my pain I rose to my feet and slowly made my way towards were I had heard her voice. Beyond the last cliff rose the sun. The sky seemed bloodshot and full of sorrow and mourning. I longed for her to be there. Safe and sound. Smiling as I cantered towards her, rescuing her from this blackened forest. But there was nothing save for a small, charred hovel, merely an echo of what was and would no longer be.
I watched it in despair, thinking maybe she would step out and everything would be okay. Thinking maybe, just maybe, she could be alive. But as I watched the sun set, felt the air turn crisp and salty, I knew that it couldn’t be. Torn and abandoned, I set off on my own. I was determined to put my past behind me, no matter the cost. I knew I had to survive, for that’s what Haley would have wanted.
Having grown up in that barn, I barely knew our own land, let alone the outside world. Yet I set off anyway, slowly at first, savoring my last steps in the familiar, and prolonging the frightening unknown. Eventually though, I came upon a tall cliff in which I stood and gazed out at the expanding fields before me. The grass stretched out in long, rolling waves as far as the eye could see. There was little life and once again the sun was lowering. I knew I needed shelter, but I didn’t know where to go. I looked behind me, thinking maybe I could still go back. Maybe this was all a big mistake. But no, grass behind me, grass in front of me, grass, grass, grass.
I looked up into the sky, gazing at the silver and blue flecks, highlighted by the hazy black blur and ivory moon. I buckled my knees and lowered my head, out in full view, hoping this night wouldn’t be my last. As the wind poured over me in long, heavy blasts, I heard a distant thudding. It was quiet at first, and then the ground beneath me started to shake. The sound got louder and louder, overwhelming me. I had an urge to run but I was glued to the spot in utter fear. The rumbling struck my heart with every beat, made my knees wobbly and neck tense. Then it stopped. Time froze, seconds turned to minutes, minutes turned to hours, hours turned to days, and then time ended altogether. A single breath hit me like a bomb. Turning my head slowly, I peered at the creatures behind me…..
To be continued……
